Guru Nanak Dev Ji 550th Gurpurb – Guru Nanak Jayanti
Guru Nanak dev Ji was the first Guru and the founder of the Sikh Religion. He is known as the common spiritual leader of Hindus, Sikhs, and Muslims. Guru Nanak was born at the village of Talwandi (Rai Bhoi di Talwandi) currently known as Nankana Sahib (in Pakistan) on 17 April 1469.
His father’s name was Mehta Kalu and his Mother’s name was Tripta. He also has a sister who is known as Bebe Nanaki.
Shri Guru Nanak dev is well known in the historic, religious, social and literary fields of Punjab. He was the first Sikh Guru, a social reformer, a poet, a traveler and a most influencing historic figure in Punjab.
Guru Nanak Dev is Know by many names in India and Other parts of the world like – Guru Nanak Sahab, Baba Nanak, Nanakcharya, Nanak Lama, Nanak Rishi, Nanak Peer, Vali Hind, Nanak Vali and many more
Guru Nanak was an intellect and master of great wisdom. While learning Sanskrit and Farsi as a kid he surprised his teachers with his knowledge and philosophy. He refused to wear the Janehu when he was 9 years old and explained the real meaning Sacred Thread to purohit.
Guru Nanak dev was married to Bibi Sulakhni and had two sons Shri Chand and Lakhmi Das. Later he moved to his sister Bebe Nanaki’s home in Sultanpur Lodhi where he starts working under Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi.
Baba Nanak gave a great contribution to Sikh scripture and Punjabi literature. His Baani (in 19 Ragas) is present in the Holy book of Shri Guru Granth Sahib. Japuji Sahib which is known as the “Mool Mantra” or “Summary of scripture Guru Granth Sahib” is written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
His other famous writings are – Asa di var, Manjh di var, Barahmaah Tukhari, Babarbani, and Sidh Gosht.
Baba Nanak believed in Monotheism while most of the society in India believed in Polytheism at that time. He was against the superstitions and rituals which were looting the society in the name of religion. He said that God is One and is present in each and every particle of the universe.
It is said that he went for a bath in a Bei ( Rivulet ) in Sultanpur Lodhi. He remained disappeared in the water for three days and got enlighted. After that Guru Nanak dev went for travel in four directions which is known as “4 Udasiya”. On this travel, he met many persons and enlighten them with the message of God.
The first Sikh Guru spent his last days at Kartarpur and chosen Guru Angad Dev as his successor. Baba Nanak spent his life in the selfless service of humanity until leaving this world in 1553.
Every year Sikh community celebrates the birth anniversary of their beloved guru on the Full moon day of Katak (Katak di Pooranmashi). People visit Gurudwaras to Celebrate the holy day. Akhand Path, Kirtan and Langars are organized at various Gurdwaras.
This Year we are celebrating the 550th Parkash Purab of the Founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev Ji on 12 November 2019. Special religious functions are organized in Sultanpur Lodhi, Punjab (India). This day is also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti, Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav, Guru Nanak Birthday, and Guru Nanak Gurpurab.
